Wireless internet networks will be installed in all Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities, according to US officials.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs has pledged to install the networks in its 153 hospitals, 134 nursing homes and 50 residential rehabilitation facilities across the nation.

The project will allow veterans and their families to use the networks for therapeutic activities as well communications and email.

Any network installed will run separately from Wi-Fi networks already in place to support medical operations. Broadband cellular wireless is also being considered as an alternative to Wi-Fi for the patient network.

The department will consult the technology industry about business models for the proposed network. Options include asking users to pay for access and supporting the service through advertising.
