Kingston General Hospital in Canada is taking steps to become more patient-friendly as part of its five-year strategic plan.

The changes include giving staff name-tags and putting whiteboards in patient rooms and nursing centres.

Each worker will write their name and what treatment they have recommended on the board, so that other workers can see what has been advised and easily update visiting relatives.

Carpets will also be removed to make the hospital look better and reduce the risk of spreading infections.

The measures are the result of a consultation with 2,000 patients and staff, and are part of a four-stage strategic plan that is expected to be phased in by the end of 2015.

Other strategic goals include a greater emphasis on teamwork between hospital departments, providing support for research and increasing the focus on acute speciality care.
