Scottish health boards have spent £1.85m on 873 bariatric beds to accommodate obese individuals in the past five years, according to STV.

The TV channel collected the data from 13 of the 14 Scottish health boards using the Freedom of Information Act.

The beds have a reinforced frame and a larger sleeping area than standard beds.

NHS officials have confirmed that these measures had to be taken to deal with the growing population of obese people in Scotland.
