The University of California, San Diego, has opened a clinic dedicated to mapping and monitoring pre-cancerous moles.

The clinic, the first of its kind, aims to provide a high level of specialised care for patients with a melanoma and those with potential of developing one.

Clinic director Richard L Gallo said melanoma is 90% curable when caught early.

“There is a great need for the service in San Diego and we are happy to bring this long-awaited project to our community,” Gallo said.

SkinMedica made a philanthropic contribution of $100,000 towards the clinic’s launch, and has committed to donate $1 from every sale of its sunscreen products to cancer research and detection.
