Researchers at a US university have developed a nanodiamond coating that can prolong the life of joint replacement devices.

Knee and hip replacements usually last around ten years, requiring many recipients to further surgery to replace them.

The coating, made up of small diamonds, adheres to the metal of joint replacement devices, reducing wear and tear.

The researchers, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, plan to conduct performance testing of the nanodiamond coating later in 2010.
