Plans for an $800m hospital at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas have been approved.
The facility will replace the existing St Paul’s hospital, which has become too costly to maintain and renovate.
The 12-storey hospital will have 424 beds, 40 emergency rooms, 24 operating rooms, a helicopter pad and a 450-car parking garage.
Dr Daniel K Podolsky, president of University of Texas Southwestern, said that the hospital must promote innovative patient care and integrate it with the needs of students and trainees.
The construction of the hospital will start in March 2011, and is due to be completed by September 2014.
