Zimmer has announced the first implantation of the Zimmer Non-Contact Bridging (NCB) Periprosthetic Plating System, which is designed for femoral fractures that occur around a hip or knee implant.

The system consists of a set of plates and screws, designed to address poor bone quality, difficult fixation and other issues faced by the surgeons during prosthetic fracture treatment.

It features a wider plate design at one end that allows for stable fixation around the prosthesis, but a narrow design along the rest of the plate to minimise soft tissue disruption.

The Zimmer NCB Periprosthetic Plating System is scheduled for full release later in 2010.
