UK Health Secretary Andrew Lansley is planning to announce the end of mixed-sex wards in English hospitals.

Only accident and emergency and intensive care units will be allowed to have mixed-sex accommodation.

Mr Lansley said that he is deeply frustrated at the fact that mixed-sex accommodation has not been eliminated from the NHS.

One in every ten patients is admitted into a mixed-sex ward at present, while a third of patients are forced to share bathrooms.

NHS trusts could be fined if they do not get rid of their mixed wards by the end of the year.
