US hospitals spent $83bn caring for diabetic patients in 2008, according to an analysis by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

The amount accounts for 23% of total hospital expenditure on treating all conditions in 2008.

Hospital stays for diabetic patients were also found to be 25% longer than stays for non-diabetic patients, the analysis added.

Medicare paid about 60% of the hospital stays for diabetic patients, while private insurance paid 23%.
