Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust (SUHT) in England has announced that 99% of its hospital beds are on single-sex wards.

SUHT manages Southampton General Hospital, Princess Anne Hospital and Countess Mountbatten House. The three hospitals have 1,100 beds in total, of which only ten are on mixed-sex wards.

A SUHT spokesperson said that mixed-sex accommodation is limited to a few areas where specialist care and observation is essential.

The trust received more than £1m from the UK Department of Health in 2009 as part of a campaign to improve privacy and dignity of patients.
