Sainte-Justine children’s hospital in Montreal, Canada, is to receive C$995m to upgrade and expand its facilities.

About C$925m will be invested by the Quebec Government and C$70m will be provided by the hospital foundation.

The project will include two new buildings, one of which will house a research centre and the other specialised units for neonatology, birthing rooms, neonatal and paediatric intensive care, and surgical and medical imaging.

The research centre will contain 82 wet laboratories for basic research and a dry lab floor for clinical research.

After the expansion, the hospital will have 419 new single-room beds, 216 in the new buildings and 158 in the renovated building. Of these, 154 will be paediatric single-patient rooms.

The hospital expects to call for tenders later in 2010. Construction of the new buildings is expected to start in 2011, and renovation is due to be completed by 2018.
