Doctors have removed the infected kidney of a morbidly obese patient through her vagina, the first surgery of its kind, according to health authorities in Lyon.

The 117kg-patient’s kidney had been destroyed by a serious of chronic infections and had to be removed.

However, doctors concluded that cutting through abdominal fat to remove the kidney would pose too great a risk of infection.

Instead, they made tiny incisions on the patient’s abdomen and a 6cm incision at the rear of the vagina, through which they were successfully able to remove the kidney.

The procedure is considered to diminish the pain and the risk of complications because the incisions are small, according to the doctors.
