Bedsores have been linked to hundreds of deaths in Scotland in the last five years, according to Scottish Government statistics.

They were directly linked to 78 deaths in between 2005 and 2009, and recorded as an underlying cause or contributory factor in 566 more during the same period.

Liberal Democrat health spokesman Ross Finnie, who obtained the statistics, said that the public would be shocked to see that Scots are still dying from bedsores in the 21st century.

“Bedsores can arise because a patient has been left alone by staff for hours at a time, and this needs to stop,” Finnie added.

“The government must treat bedsores as seriously as hospital infections.”
