NHS Scotland is to begin a swine flu vaccination programme in response to concerns that the virus will return in a more virulent form this winter.

The NHS seasonal vaccination programme will vaccinate thousands of Scots, targeting the over 65s, pregnant women, NHS workers and individuals with underlying health problems in particular.

The vaccine will contain the H1N1 strain and two flu strains which are expected to be active this winter.

A spokesman said that H1N1 is expected to be the main flu virus circulating during the 2010-11 season, and that those with underlying health conditions, including heart and lung problems, are at an increased risk of experiencing serious complications if they catch it.
