Chandler Regional Medical Center, a Dignity Health member, has deployed TRU-D SmartUVC, a germ-killing UV disinfection robot developed by Lumalier, to protect patients from serious healthcare-associated infections.

Chandler Regional, a 243-bed acute-care facility, is the first hospital in Arizona state to deploy the UV technology.

Total Room Ultraviolet Disinfection (TRU-D) is reportedly the only portable UV disinfection system in the market that precisely measures reflected UV-C emissions with Sensor360 to automatically calculate the pathogen-lethal UV dose required for proper and consistent disinfection of healthcare environments.

The germicidal light energy generated by TRU-D modifies the DNA structure of an infectious cell, thereby destroying it.

In addition, TRU-D set-up is quick and easy as it does not require input of room measurements or covering of windows and vents.

It virtually eliminates the need to move it to multiple places in the room as it can disinfect an entire room, including shadowed spaces, from one location.

After disinfection is complete, TRU-D automatically shuts down and audibly notifies the operator.

TRU-D kills pathogens such as Clostridium difficile (C. diff.), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).

Chandler Regional quality management director Kay Tracy said that TRU-D offers an abundance of health benefits.

"Chandler Regional is committed to providing the highest quality medical care, and we are pleased to offer this innovative solution as one of the many ways in which we bolster the well-being and safety of our staff and patients."

"Chandler Regional is committed to providing the highest quality medical care, and we are pleased to offer this innovative solution as one of the many ways in which we bolster the well-being and safety of our staff and patients," Tracy added.

There are currently more than 100 TRU-Ds deployed in hospitals and medical facilities across the US, Canada and Europe, including the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Anne Arundel Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia.

TRU-D president Chuck Dunn said that TRU-D SmartUVC can achieve 99.99% disinfection of all virus and bacteria.

"It is breakthrough technology that will revolutionise the cleaning and disinfection of healthcare environments, taking the guesswork out of previous protocols and ensuring confidence in clinicians and patients alike," Dunn added.

Dignity Health, a 21-state network headquartered in San Francisco, comprises nearly 11,000 physicians, 56,000 employees and more than 300 care centres, including hospitals, urgent and occupational care, imaging centres, home health and primary care clinics.
