Canada’s North York General Hospital (NYGH) has launched a programme which will help hospitals across Canada implement technology to improve patient safety.
The hospital received a $1m investment from Canada Health Infoway to commence the project which will add 250 electronic order sets covering pediatrics, maternal/newborn and mental health.
Clinicians can receive evidence, guidelines and treatment best practices with links to regularly-updated information from medical journals, using these electronic order sets.
NYGH president and CEO Tim Rutledge said, "This funding will allow us to advance our health information technology infrastructure for the benefit of our patients, while supporting other health care providers reach their full potential in CPOE for the benefit of their patients."
The project also targets the development of the Canadian computerised provider order entry (CPOE) toolkit which eliminates the need for handwritten orders and prescriptions.
Once the CPOE is developed, NYGH’s order sets will be made available for free, to help the hospitals across the country to implement the toolkit.
