Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, US, has used Brainlab’s curve image guided technology to perform surgery on its first occipital brain tumour case.
The system features image guidance software, which uses 3D displays and hallmark Brainlab image enrichment, allowing for fast image updating while tracking instruments.
Swedish Covenant neurosurgeon Jerrel Boyer said that having the option to use image guidance for a prone, occipital brain tumour case without fiducials, increases the flexibility and visualisation in these types of procedures.
"The curve camera can telescope down to a low height, offering easy registration for navigation even when the patient is lying in the prone position," Boyer added.
The capture, encode, record, stream (CERS) functionality of the system will allow surgeons to record data displayed on a curve monitor, including the interactive DICOM viewer, navigation software, and external sources plugged into the system.
The recordings can be viewed later and accessed by the surgeons for teaching and research purposes, in addition to being downloadable from the CERS web portal, or directly exported from the system itself.
Swedish Covenant chief operating officer Anthony Guaccio added: "Curve is an all-encompassing technology that not only enables the collection of vital patient data, but allows surgeons to seamlessly use and integrate this data intra-operatively in order to provide ultimate patient care and outcomes."
