The Christ Hospital in Ohio, US, will invest $265m to expand its main campus in Mt Auburn.

Work is expected to begin in June and will involve the building of an orthopaedic and spine care facility to support physicians and patients.

The new 332,000ft2 centre will consist of 60 private inpatient rooms, ten operating rooms dedicated to orthopaedic and spine surgeries. It will also have two shelled operating rooms for future growth, physician offices and administrative offices.

It will offer imaging, pain management, sports medicine, neurosurgery, physical medicine, rehabilitation and rheumatology services.

Expected to open in 2015, the centre is also set to provide the area’s first fragility fracture and osteoporosis management centre, the hospital said.

Christ Hospital president and CEO Susan Croushore said: "It will be efficiently organised and designed with patient and family-centred care in mind, including all private rooms and unique spaces for families that contribute to the healing environment, maximising the healing power of natural light.

"Connectors will be constructed from the new facility to all existing buildings on campus for added patient and visitor convenience."

The Christ Hospital chairman of Board of Directors Glen Mayfield said: "The orthopaedic and spine centre will provide an advanced level of excellence for this region and move the ‘needle of care’ by improving access to highly specialised medical and surgical care, offering a patient and family experience among the best in the country."

Expansion work also involves building a new 900-space visitor parking garage and relocation of the materials management building.

The hospital has selected Messer Construction as the construction manager and architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) for the expansion project.
