Parkview Medical Center in Colorado, US, has deployed Truven Health Analytics’ Micromedex Pharmacy Intervention to improve care quality and patient safety.

The 370-bed acute care facility will use the technology for clinical surveillance and evidence-based resources, to identify at-risk patients for adverse drug events and other threats to patient safety.

"The clinical surveillance technology, which electronically identifies at-risk patients, is part of the Micromedex 360 Care Insights Suite."

Parkview Medical Center pharmacy director Greg Harder said Micromedex Pharmacy Intervention will enable pharmacists to quickly identify high-risk patients, particularly in life-threatening situations.

"We are also focused on those patients who fit specific criteria for an intervention to help manage costs," Harder added.

"Because Pharmacy Intervention is real-time, we receive notifications electronically when patients meet these criteria, giving us the opportunity to prevent medication-related problems and making sure patients remain safe."

Pharmacy Intervention provides a comprehensive view of a patient’s results, history and pertinent information on a user-specific 360° dashboard.

The technology covers important areas such as antimicrobial, anticoagulation and glycemic monitoring, intravenous to oral therapy (IV to PO) conversions, narrow therapeutic indexing, patient safety, and target medications.

Pharmacy Intervention uses clinical profiles built with Micromedex evidence-based rules and clinical decision support case-definitions.

Micromedex Pharmacy Intervention can be accessed through the internet, and a mobile application that delivers alerts to aid in the identification of at-risk patients is also available.
