The Kerala state government in India is planning expansion and modernisation projects at Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital for Women and Children (SAT Hospital) to upgrade the infrastructure at the facility.

The state government health minister VS Sivakumar was quoted by The Hindu as saying that apart from the ongoing work in the new hospital block, renovation would be taken up in the old block.

"We are planning to bring the casualty block of the hospital from the rear to the front where a new casualty block will be constructed at a cost of Rs.1 crore," Sivakumar added.

"Two new lifts are planned at either end of the old building. We will also start ambulance service for the hospital using National Rural Health Mission funds."

The new block is to be converted into a super-speciality wing to include an infertility clinic, newborn and paediatric intensive care units, neurology wings and paediatric cardiology.

Hospital equipment worth Rs15m ($276,526) is expected to be installed at the new block, after the completion of the civil work.

Revival of the Hospital Development Society and deployment of additional cleaning staff to ensure hygiene and sanitation were the other initiatives to be taken up in the near future, Sivakumar added.
