The Indonesian Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) has announced that a new hospital is nearing construction in the Gaza Strip and will open in 2013.

Located 3km from the Israeli border, the Indonesia-funded facility is being constructed across 9,000m² of land, which was donated by the Palestinian Authority in 2011.

MER-C chief president Sarbini Abdul Murad said the agency will start furnishing the new building in May, before installing the medical equipment.

"Hopefully, we will be able to complete the process by the end of this year and the hospital will begin operation in 2013," Murad told reporters in the area.

"We hope that with the hospital, people will no longer need to leave the Gaza Strip for treatment."

The two-story building, aimed at treating and rehabilitating trauma patients, as well as providing first aid and care, will hold 100 beds.
