NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in the US has installed Awarepoint’s real-time location system (RTLS) at its Columbia University Medical Center campus to improve workflow, quality of care and patient satisfaction.
The application is part of Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite of RTLS-enabled solutions; it monitors the location of patients, personnel and assets. It also runs information and data from a hospital’s scheduling and EHR systems through a series of predefined rules and sends a series of notifications to caregivers, allowing the hospitals to identify issues in their procedures.
Aurelia Boyer, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital CIO, said the system coming online was an important milestone in the development of the health facility.
"The solution uses real-time information about the location of equipment 24 hours a day, as well as a very sophisticated rules engine, user interface, and set of interfaces to other clinical systems to dramatically improve our communication and efficiency."
Integrated with the operating room scheduling and EHR software, the system will help the hospital organise and coordinate activities from registration to post-op, solving logistical issues.
NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia OR director John Evanko added: "RTLS helped streamline patient handoffs because it automatically notifies the next unit patients will be moved to when surgeries are completed. The system also notifies housekeeping that ORs need to be prepared for the next patient, optimising utilisation of the OR."
