Wake Forest Baptist Health-Lexington Medical Center in North Carolina, US, will invest $1.8m to expand its emergency department.
The medical centre will expand the emergency department by 70% by remodelling the existing space and adding a 5,000ft² extension.
Lexington Medical Center president Donny Lambeth said the investment would help improve the health of the residents of Davidson County.
"Our emergency department has been operating above capacity for some time, and this plan provides the additional space to meet the needs of the community," he said.
The expanded emergency department will include 26 rooms, an expanded family waiting area, eight beds for minor illnesses and injuries, two additional treatment rooms, a room for patient evaluation and a new area for behavioural health patients.
The project is expected to begin in June and could decrease patient waiting times and enable those patients to be treated, released or admitted to the hospital quicker, the hospital officials said.
