California-based Palomar Health has announced that it will open a new hospital, Palomar Medical Center West, in Northern San Diego County in August.
The $1bn facility, dubbed ‘the hospital of the future’ because of its emphasis on new technology and sustainability, has 288 beds in patient-centric rooms, with nursing alcoves outside each patient room.
The 11-storey hospital has been built and has passed the state inspection.
Palomar Health president and chief executive officer Michael Covert said, "The building is complete. We are able to start the next phase of transformation and that is moving from building to training our staff to deliver the highest quality of healthcare today."
Palomar Health plans to train the staff, install the equipment and seek an operating license for the new facility through the California Department of Public Health over the next few months.
The new facility, which features a 120-bed west tower and 168-bed east tower, was designed by CO Architects. The San Diego office of DPR Construction managed construction.
The existing Palomar Medical Center in Downtown Escondido will specialise in women’s, children’s and behavioural health, and will be renamed Palomar Health Downtown Campus.
