The Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, has selected hardware and software solutions from IBM to manage data and improve patient care.

The IBM Smarter Computing system, which was selected over bids by HP and Hitachi, is designed to allow the medical centre to select insight from the growing volumes of patient date and provide it easily to doctor, nurses and clinical laboratories.

The hospital will implement IBM’s Power 780 and 740 systems, the x3650 M3 systems, DS8000 high-capacity storage system and the Storwize V7000 Unified Storage Systems.

Yoon Soo Keun, managing director of Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital IT subsidiary Dongeun Information Technology, said: "We wanted to provide a powerful platform that made it easier to develop and integrate tools supporting physicians’ decision-making processes."

The system, which can handle more than 100TB of data, is expected to improve patient care by helping in determining appropriate treatments.

The hospital will utilise the new infrastructure for SU-III Project, an integrated medical information system, which will set up a single electronic medical records system with a single database.

An IBM PowerVM virtualisation technology will also enable a platform that can aid data sharing between the hospital branches.

IBM Korea director Lee Jang Suk added: "Applying advanced technologies in academic hospitals such as Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital holds the potential to turn them into regional healthcare hotspots."
