St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange, Texas, US, has selected McKesson’s Paragon hospital information system (HIS) to address meaningful use and improve patient safety and clinical care.
The medical centre replaced Meditech systems with the Paragon solution, which is built on a Microsoft Windows-based platform with a single database, and began its 90-day reporting period for Stage 1 meaningful use within a week of going live.
St. Mark’s Medical Center information technology director Patti Sulak said the hospital chose Paragon to help on its path to meaningful use and to qualify for incentive funds.
"However, we also needed a proven, modern system that would help us improve patient care, and our clinicians are already seeing benefits. Had we stayed on our previous system, we would have continued to struggle on both counts," Sulak added.
The medical centre will leverage the new HIS, which offers an integrated suite of advanced clinical, financial, physician and ancillary applications, to manage clinical and revenue operations.
According to the hospital, the 14-month implementation process incorporated training that permitted clinicians to move from paper to electronic documentation.
The president of Paragon at McKesson Provider Technologies, Jim Pesce, said that these transitions are about meaningful improvements for the long-term.
"They are simply the first steps in integrating a hospital’s clinical and financial operations for better patient care and lower total cost of ownership," Pesce added.
