The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (RJAH) in Shropshire, England, has deployed a Virtual Assistant, which provides patients and visitors with information on facilities and appointment check-in procedures.

The Virtual Assistant, developed by Tensator, is installed at the hospital’s new £2.7m reception area and will present details of specific services operated at particular times and directions for visitors during visiting hours.

RJAH chief executive Wendy Farrington Chadd said the Tensator Virtual Assistant is a novel way to improve messaging and communication to patients, assisting their access to the hospital.

"It is an innovative way to convey key messages and it complements our reception team, signage and way-finding as part of the whole new development," Chadd added.

"With the new technology, the hospital can improve patient flow, speed up the check-in process and guide patients through appointment check-in with information on the usage of self check-in kiosks."

The Virtual Assistant will be set to present programmed audio-visual messaging dependent on the day and time and can be programmed to display new media at any time.

Tensator general manager Kevin Hickson said, "The Virtual Assistant will aid in creating a more relaxed atmosphere within the reception area by reducing confusion and frustration amongst visitors and patients."
