The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) in the US will invest $163m to expand the hospital capacity and construct a neuroscience-focused facility.

The project includes the addition of 120 inpatient beds, 25 intensive care beds and eight operating rooms for adult care.

The new neuroscience-focused hospital will be created in the building that formerly housed the CS Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital.

U-M Hospitals and Health Centres chief executive officer Doug Strong said the investment in the care for adults, and especially in clinical neuroscience specialties, would help all Michigan residents and others who turn to the hospital for advanced care.

"Even as we carry out this expansion, we will make every effort to use our existing facilities and create operational improvements to accommodate the growing number of patients who seek to come here," Strong said.

The project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2014 and will increase the number of private adult rooms at U-M by 29%.

The health system will renovate 163,000ft² of clinical space and 104,000ft² of space for support services and offices for the neuroscience part of the project.

U-M executive vice president for medical affairs and UMHS CEO Ora Pescovitz added: "I’m especially excited about focusing our neuroscience services in an environment where our teams can use their skill and the latest technology to treat patients with conditions ranging from aneurysms and strokes to brain tumours, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease."
