Highland Hospital in West Virginia, US, is set to complete the construction of its new mental health facility in Kanawha City by July 2012.
The 73,000ft², four-story facility will provide a 20-bed children’s unit, a 20-bed adolescent unit and a 40-bed adult unit.
Hospital spokesman Jim Strawn told Charleston Daily Mail that the 98-bed Kanawha facility will do more than just improve patients’ access to psychiatric services.
The $29m hospital will feature increased triage space to determine what type of care a patient should receive.
"In that way, it’s going to take a lot of burden off of the local emergency rooms," said Strawn. "We’ll also hopefully alleviate some of the overcrowding at the state-run hospitals."
According to Strawn, about 57 positions will be added when the facility opens, bringing total employment at Highland to more than 300.
"We really are becoming a major employment base here in the Kanawha Valley," said Strawn.
