Utah Cancer Specialists (UCS), a community-based oncology practice located in Utah, US, has selected Comcast Business’ Comcast Ethernet and Business Internet services to connect its 12 locations, supporting the group’s primary physicians and mid-level practitioners.
The network solution from Comcast Business enables real-time transfer of electronic medical records and high-resolution radiology files, improving the speed of diagnosis and information sharing to enhance patient care.
UCS information technology director Ben Harkness said that in addition to supporting its physicians and the treatment they provide directly to patients, the organisation’s network also supports the behind-the-scenes work necessary to ensure continuous business operations.
"And we not only reduced our monthly costs, but the significant increase in bandwidth also eliminated the daily IT headaches of trying to manage around the limited speeds of our legacy T1 connections so we can focus on new technology initiatives to improve the quality of care and provide the best experience possible for our patients," Harkness added.
UCS currently has 12 locations along the Wasatch Front, including a data centre and administrative office, nine clinics and two large cancer centres.
Comcast’s wide area network solution allows UCS to quickly transfer high-resolution radiology files and patient records between locations so physicians always have access to a patient’s up-to-date diagnosis and treatment information from different locations.

By GlobalDataEach day, approximately 250-300 patients visit UCS’s clinics for treatment, which include multiple visits.
The Comcast Ethernet Network Service provides 200 Megabits per second (Mbps) of performance to UCS’s administrative office, 70Mbps connections at each of its cancer centres and 15Mbps connections at each clinic, to enhance connectivity between facilities.
UCS also has a dedicated Comcast Business Internet line at its administrative office for internet access.
Previously, UCS used to schedule backup and disaster recovery processes for off hours due to the limited bandwidth but the new high-bandwidth connection enables it to conduct them whenever required.
The faster internet access also allows UCS to provide Wi-Fi access for patients and visitors.
