The World Bank has granted a $214.73m loan for Ukraine’s Serving People, Improving Health Project, in a bid to help implement reforms and improve services in the health sector.
As part of a five-year project, the funds will be used to develop medical infrastructure and improve the quality of health services in eight regions across the country.
Regions being covered under the project include Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Poltava, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Volyn, Zakarpattya, and Zaporizhya.
Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine World Bank country director Qimiao Fan said: "Given that most Ukrainians consider health as one of their top life priorities, we are pleased to support a project that will help them become healthier.
"This new investment will help improve the quality and availability of health services to millions of Ukrainians in selected regions, and contribute to more efficient use of resources in the healthcare system."
The investment will be used to introduce a new funding mechanism within hospitals and enhance primary and secondary prevention, early detection, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
From the project’s total budget, $41m will be provided for each region and 10% will be financed by local authorities.
The country’s ministry of health will implement another project, which will deal with health financing, capacity building, e-health / information systems, in addition to increasing awareness of the main risk factors, helping to avoid cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
Ukraine Health Minister Alexander Kvitashvili said: "We believe that this project will be the driving force for the reform, which will change the country’s healthcare and, in 2015, it will build the foundation for fundamental reforms and make them irreversible in the future."
