The Ministry of Health of Chile has become a member of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)-led joint initiative, the Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americas, aimed at strengthening primary health care systems across the region.

This membership is expected to align investments and actions with Chile’s health care priorities, enhancing the capacity and management of the first level of care.

The Alliance, initiated in December 2023 by PAHO, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the World Bank, focuses on investment, innovation, and policy implementation to transform regional health systems.

From its inception, it has engaged with ten countries in the region, promoting strategic and technical dialogue.

Chile is the third country to operationalise the alliance.

World Bank Health Nutrition Global Director Juan Pablo Uribe said: “Primary healthcare is central to World Bank’s strategy on health.

“We reiterate our strong support for this Alliance, which now includes Chile and is very much in line with the support that we are already providing to strengthen primary healthcare in the country.”

The Alliance assists in the national primary health care investment plan establishments and offers support to bolster health system resilience and capacity.

It also plays a role in the design and implementation of evidence-based interventions tailored to each country’s unique context and challenges.

Chile Health Minister Ximena Paz Aguilera Sanhueza said: “It is an honour to participate in the launch of this Consultative Board of the Alliance for Primary Health Care. I appreciate the commitment of each institution accompanying us on this path that Chile has decided to undertake.”

Chile’s incorporation into the Alliance focuses on building efficient health systems throughout Latin America.

This partnership will bring together technical and financial resources to improve quality, access, and equity in primary health care.

The Mesa Consultiva, a national governance mechanism, has been established to ensure coordination between the Alliance and Chile’s Ministry of Health.
