Aspirus Health has initiated the construction of a $31.1m expansion project at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Michigan, US.

Fencing installation and site preparation for the hospital expansion began last month, marking the commencement of on-site work by construction crews.

Aspirus is focused on bolstering healthcare in the Upper Peninsula, responding to the increasing demand for quality care by broadening essential services and resources for the community’s present and future needs.

Miron Construction has been appointed as the general contractor, with HGA Architecture responsible for the design.

Aspirus Health Michigan regional president Natalie Seaber said: “This 1920s building has proudly served our community for more than a century, but it’s time to take the next step.

“Bringing all services under one roof allows us to modernise our facility, elevate the patient experience, and ensure we’re ready to meet the evolving healthcare needs of today and the future.”

The Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital expansion plan encompasses a 28,000ft² addition and a modernisation of the facility.

This will involve relocation of services from the old building to the new structure, redesigning inpatient rooms, and centralising lab, imaging and pharmacy services to better serve the community.

Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital chief administrative officer Melanee Tiura said: “We’re excited to enhance and expand local care while also supporting the growth of the local economy.

“While the existing hospital has served our community for many years, it became clear that to meet the increasing needs of our patients, we needed to build a larger, more modern facility with expanded services and greater capacity.”

The projected completion date for the expansion project is March 2027.

Aspirus Health recently began a $5m renovation and expansion at Aspirus Houghton Clinic to improve healthcare efficiency, access, and patient experience in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan.
