HCA Healthcare UK (HCA UK) has completed the implementation of MEDITECH Expanse, a cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) system, throughout its 11 acute hospitals and multiple outpatient sites to streamline workflows and improve patient safety.

The system provides clinicians throughout all HCA Healthcare UK facilities with a unified, multi-disciplinary health record, offering a consolidated view of each patient’s health status and journey, accessible at any point of care.

By adopting a single EHR platform, HCA Healthcare UK has enabled more effective collaboration between clinical and IT teams across its sites. The streamlined system reduces the reliance on multiple applications, delivering a consistent user experience and generating cost efficiencies.

Since the introduction of MEDITECH Expanse, HCA Healthcare UK has reported strengthened patient safety through electronic medication management and improved access to comprehensive patient histories.

The platform also offers personalised web-native navigation and mobile access, supporting clinicians in their daily workflows and providing nurses with smartphone-enabled tools for care review, documentation, and patient identification.

The Expanse platform is hosted on the Google Cloud Platform through MEDITECH UK, providing the security and scalability required to support emerging technologies, including AI. The shift to a cloud infrastructure also centralises services and simplifies onboarding for new facilities.

HCA Healthcare UK credits the success of the implementation to the collaboration of its internal teams, CereCore, and Meditech’s support staff for the project.

With the system in place, HCA Healthcare UK plans to further integrate Meditech solutions and third-party apps to accelerate care delivery, automate processes, and improve efficiency.

HCA UK CEO John Reay said: “Our primary objective for the Expanse implementation was to establish a single, evidence-based standard of best-practice care across our hospitals and facilities.

“This new foundation will provide us with the agility to adapt rapidly as medicine evolves, ensuring a high-quality experience for both our patients and our staff, across all locations.”

Earlier this month, HCA Healthcare announced a $4.8m commitment to Pepperdine University’s School of Nursing within the College of Health Science in Los Angeles, US.
