This initiative provides instant walk-in access to care, filling a critical gap in the mental health services available to young people in Utah.
Situated on the first floor of the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, the programme can serve up to 12 patients concurrently, with admissions occurring on a rolling basis.
The care team conducts evaluations of each patient, with the duration of stay varying from a few hours to a maximum of 23 hours of care.
Following this, patients may be discharged with a safety and follow-up care plan or recommended for hospital admission or a care programme.

By GlobalDataHuntsman Mental Health Institute executive director David Eldredge said: “By establishing the Youth Crisis Care programme at Huntsman Mental Health Institute, we’re aiming to meet this growing demand with a trauma-informed, child-centred approach that relieves pressure on emergency departments and helps families access timely, compassionate mental health support in moments of crisis.”
The Youth Crisis Care programme is designed to bridge the service gap between inpatient psychiatric care and outpatient therapy.
It aims to offer timely intervention for young patients in urgent mental health crises that do not necessitate hospitalisation.
With this programme, the majority are expected to return home with outreach support and a follow-up care plan while some adolescents may be referred to inpatient programmes.
A multidisciplinary team operates the programme continuously, including psychiatrists for children and adolescents, medical directors, and practice clinicians, among others.
In addition, the facility also includes a designated waiting area for families.
