MedStar Health has acquired nonprofit Hope for Henry Foundation, thereby ensuring the continuation of the evidence-based incentive programme that assists children undergoing medical treatment.

The move will embed the Hope for Henry’s programme directly into the clinical operations of MedStar Health. This builds on a partnership that began more than 20 years ago.

MedStar Health will prioritise a phased rollout of the Hope for Henry programme across its paediatric service lines, supported by a structured implementation and training plan based on the foundation’s data and experience.

In 2003, Hope for Henry was launched at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Since then, the foundation’s programmes have delivered measurable results such as reducing the need for MRI sedation, improving treatment adherence, and enhancing the overall patient experience for children undergoing hospitalisation.

The foundation’s approach addresses the emotional impact of medical treatments on young patients.

MedStar Health paediatrics executive director Dr Michael Donnelly said: “Hope for Henry’s mission perfectly aligns with MedStar Health’s goal of treating the whole person.

“Improving outcomes means caring for the whole child; body, mind, and spirit. We are proud to integrate Hope for Henry’s evidence-based programme into our world-class paediatric care.”

The foundation is named in memory of Henry Strongin Goldberg, a MedStar Health patient who was diagnosed with Fanconi anaemia in 1995 and died in 2002.

Since its establishment, Hope for Henry has supported more than 10,000 children at MedStar Georgetown and over 150,000 children across the US.

The foundation also provides resources to families to help calm children before medical procedures such as bloodwork and vaccinations.

MedStar Health plans to ensure consistent delivery and long-term impact of the Hope for Henry programme by embedding it into everyday clinical practice.
