Gibson Area Hospital in the US has renovated its second floor with a new obstetrics department for mothers and babies.
Built on a 10,000ft² empty shell above the emergency department of the hospital, the new unit is part of a $6m expansion and renovation project that began in 2012.

The new department consists of five private labour, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms that will allow expectant mothers to stay in the same room during their entire stay in the hospital.
Each room of the department is equipped with an in-room refrigerator, flat-screen television, Wi-Fi, a foldout bed and linens for fathers.
The unit also houses a new Caesarean-section operating room that has been built at the end of the second floor of the hospital.
Additionally, the new rooms have infant care centres that help physicians and nurses complete baby care without taking the baby from the room.

By GlobalDataEquipped with updated remote monitoring technology, the unit also has one room that features a labour tub designed to offer natural pain relief during labour.
The remainder of the second floor houses six new private rooms built primarily for patients receiving hip and knee replacements and for some general surgery patients. The private rooms feature bathrooms with showers, bathroom and room doors, bedside medicine scanning and charting and communication boards.
Gibson Area Hospital chief compliance officer Mike Meunier said that the new department would have minor procedure rooms added for cardiology, as well as interventional radiology and urology because of the OR expansion.
"The minor procedures will now be done in areas that were in the old OB wing, Meunier added.
