US-based Cleveland Clinic has started construction of a new inpatient hospital, which will be built at the health system’s existing Richard E Jacobs Health Centre in Avon, Ohio.
The five-story facility will involve more than $143m investment, accommodating 126 private hospital rooms, including a small intensive care unit.

Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove was quoted by Crain’s Cleveland Business as saying: "The Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital is a new kind of hospital for a new era in health care.
"The design reflects everything we’ve learned about 21st century health care, taking our best practices and developing a hospital where we operate more efficiently, reduce duplication and utilize the latest technological advancements for the benefit of our patients."
The new inpatient hospital will concentrate on services, including general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, ophthalmology and critical care medicine.
The 221,500ft² facility for lower acuity inpatient care is expected to commence operations in 2016.

By GlobalDataAs part of the project, Cleveland will also renovate 5,500ft² of existing space to expand the centre’s emergency department, radiology, lab, surgery center and pharmacy.
Cleveland-based Westlake Reed designed the project, while Gilbane will build the new inpatient hospital.
The $93m Jacobs Health Centre opened in 2011.
