The Philippine Government is enhancing healthcare services in Sorsogon’s second district with the construction of a new hospital, as reported by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
Funded by PHP144m ($2.51m) from the 2024 General Appropriations Act, the facility is set to alleviate overcrowding and meet the growing healthcare demands of local communities.

To be located in Barangay Buenavista, Irosin, the new hospital will be a four-storey building with a 250-bed capacity.
It aims to serve the increasing populations of Bulan, Santa Magdalena, Matnog and Irosin. Operations are expected to begin next year.
The initiative for the new hospital construction emerged in response to severe overcrowding at the Provincial Hospital in Sorsogon City, where patients have resorted to occupying aisles and any available space.
The existing Irosin District Hospital (IDH), a level one facility with only 25 beds, is also facing challenges, with patient loads often reaching 80 to 100, far exceeding its capacity.

Irosin District Hospital chief Sherwin Amisola said: “The IDH is one of the hospitals frequently referring patients to the Sorsogon Provincial Hospital.
“If the new provincial hospital opens here in Irosin, we will be better equipped to accommodate patients, thereby reducing congestion at the Sorsogon Provincial Hospital.”
The Philippines Government announced in October 2023 its plan to allocate approximately PHP22.98bn last year to improve the nation’s healthcare facilities and services.
