The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital (SaTH) NHS Trust’s Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in the UK is set to open two new wards to support local healthcare service improvements.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening of the new facilities. Former patient Nick Taylor, his wife, hospital staff, contractors, and community partners attended the event.

The new wards will house surgical and gastroenterology services, moving from Ward 25.
This development provides an additional 56 inpatient beds, enabling closer collaboration between rehabilitation and surgical teams. The facility aims to create a better healthcare environment and improve access for patients.
The wards have been designed in partnership with clinical teams and feature enhanced infection prevention and control measures, modern staff bases, and spacious single rooms.
These upgrades are part of the wider urgent and emergency care improvement plans at the SaTH NHS Trust.

By GlobalDataThe new wards also release space on Ward 25, allowing it to be converted into a new general medical ward in the centre of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site. This additional clinical space will help teams maintain the delivery of timely and appropriate patient care.
SaTH NHS Trust chief operating officer Ned Hobbs said: “The opening of the wards marks an important step forward in our commitment to improving healthcare for our communities.
“These new wards not only expand our capacity ready for winter but also reflect our focus on creating environments that support high-quality patient recovery and well-being. We’re incredibly proud of the teams who have worked to bring this vision to life. Our 56 new beds at RSH are complemented with 40 new acute assessment spaces opening at PRH this month too.”
Contractor ModuleCo completed 90% of construction off-site, minimising disruption to staff and patients. The two-storey modular facility offers modern, larger patient bays, designed to enhance the experience for both staff and patients.
In September 2025, RSH opened eight new patient bays in its emergency department as part of ongoing refurbishment work.
