The Government of Victoria has opened the expanded and upgraded Maryborough and District Hospital facility in Australia.

The A$115m ($73.4m) facility provides Maryborough and the surrounding region residents with access to the latest healthcare closer to home.

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan and Member for Ripon Martha Haylett attended the facility’s opening ceremony.

Allan said: “Our massive upgrade of Maryborough Hospital means local families can continue to access the high-quality care and treatment they need – close to home.”

The new facility is expected to accept its first patients next week following the announcement of additional funding.

An A$11.7m investment will support staffing, equipment installation, and operational readiness. This funding aims to bring the new purpose-built medical facility fully online.

The expansion will enable the hospital to treat 4,000 more patients annually than before.

New additions include an urgent care centre, an inpatient unit with 32 beds, and operating theatres. The site also houses a day medical centre offering oncology, dialysis, and pharmacy services.

Additionally, a new maternity unit has been introduced, equipped with dedicated birthing suites.

The upgraded design is expected to improve patient flow and staff safety. It also features new consultant suites, a reception area, and more car parking.

The redevelopment was delivered by Fairbrother Construction and the Victorian Health Building Authority.

At peak construction, the project created and sustained over 340 local jobs. The ongoing work continues on a logistics hub for hospital operations.

The A$4.3m logistics hub will increase storage capacity, enhance linen services, and modernise waste management.

Segregated spaces will improve infection control and clinical waste handling practices.

Victoria Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas said: “This massive expansion and redevelopment will help our dedicated doctors and nurses treat an extra 4,000 patients every year, ensuring Maryborough locals have access to the healthcare they need and deserve, when they need it.”
