The new unit at Westmead Hospital, part of the NSW government’s A$93m ($60.65m) commitment to enhanced end-of-life care, is designed to provide specialist care that respects the privacy and dignity of individuals with life-limiting illnesses.
The construction is expected to commence in the next few months after the design phase is finalised.
Featuring 15 en-suite bedrooms, the unit is set to be situated within a rooftop extension on level five of the Central Acute Services Building.
This location offers both privacy and convenient access to the hospital’s complementary health services.

By GlobalDataThe design, shaped by extensive consultation with staff and consumers, aims to cater to the various requirements of the communities in the Western Sydney region.
The unit’s design includes versatile spaces such as communal and private areas, a multi-faith room, and outdoor access from each of the rooms.
The state government’s funding will also facilitate the development of new or redeveloped palliative care facilities at Wyong, Nepean, Tamworth, and Orange hospitals.
NSW health minister Ryan Park said: “Across the state, more in-hospital supportive and palliative care services are needed. It’s why we’re allocating A$93m as part of the ‘World Class End of Life Care’ funding to deliver five new or refurbished purpose-designed palliative care units for staff to deliver care and support to patients and families during what can be an extremely difficult time.
“The location of the new Supportive and Palliative Care Unit at Westmead Hospital means patients and their families will have privacy and comfort within a purpose-built space, as well as access to complementary care services and facilities within Westmead Hospital.”
In related news, the Temora Hospital redevelopment in NSW also progressed with the appointment of Richard Crookes Construction as the main works contractor last month.
