KATE AI is designed to complement the skills of emergency nurses by providing a second opinion during triage.

Adventist HealthCare has introduced the KATE AI software in its emergency departments to improve patient safety and the efficiency of care.

This technology is now supporting the triage process at Shady Grove Medical Center, White Oak Medical Center, and Fort Washington Medical Center, part of the Adventist HealthCare system.

KATE AI, developed by Mednition, is designed to complement the skills of emergency nurses by providing a second opinion during triage, particularly for patients presenting with higher risks or more complex conditions.

Mednition CEO Steven Reilly said: "We're excited that Adventist HealthCare has selected KATE AI to help address the tremendous challenges facing emergency care today.

“Their system-wide expansion of KATE AI reflects a deep commitment to use innovation to support their exceptional nursing teams in improving clinical, operational, and financial outcomes.”

The AI tool analyses patient symptoms and compares them with historical medical records data to suggest the appropriate level of care, enhancing the decision-making process for care teams.

The implementation of KATE AI aims to increase the accuracy of emergency department triage, ensuring that patients are matched with the most suitable hospital services in a timely manner.

This can lead to a reduction in emergency wait times, quicker admissions or discharge decisions, and potentially shorter hospital stays for admitted patients.

In addition, KATE AI contributes to health equity by identifying and addressing systemic biases in triage that may affect individuals based on race, age or gender.

By providing immediate, data-driven insights, the tool supports the delivery of equitable care across the patient population.

Adventist HealthCare opened the new Ambulatory Surgery Center at National Harbor, Maryland, in July 2023.
