The Calgary Health Foundation, a non-profit organisation, has announced a $10m investment from the Alberta Government in Canada to bolster efforts on women's healthcare.

This two-year commitment is poised to make a substantial impact on healthcare for women across southern Alberta.

The one-time funding aims to mitigate gender inequality in healthcare, encompassing research, policy, and clinical practice.

In addition to leading to shorter wait times for women's health services, the investment is expected to create additional examination and treatment spaces, and the expansion of current health programmes.

The Government of Alberta's investment seeks to address the fact that Alberta falls below the national average for medical research funding dedicated to women's health, which is currently at 8%.

Calgary Health Foundation president and CEO Murray Sigler said: “This investment will enable us to give the necessary attention, funding, and advocacy to the unique health challenges of women.

“Through partnerships like the one with Dr Erin Brennand and the Calgary Pelvic Floor Clinic, the funding will allow us to confront the gaps in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of women's health concerns.”

As per a 2021 Alberta Women’s Health Foundation (AWHF) report, even though women constituted 51% of the province’s population, just 3.4% of its total research funds were allocated to female-specific health issues.

The latest $10m investment is anticipated to shift the balance in favour of women's health research and outcomes.

Health Minister Adriana LaGrange said: “These investments will make a real difference in tackling health issues that impact women, promoting overall well-being, and ensuring every Albertan can thrive, no matter their age or stage in life.”
