The system provides offline capabilities to ensure hospitals remain operational.

Athena Security has introduced a hospital visitor management system (VMS) on the Apple iPad, designed to meet the operational and security needs of healthcare facilities.

This system is the first of its kind on the device, providing offline capabilities to ensure hospitals remain operational during server failures, internet outages, power cuts, and natural disasters, according to the company.

Athena Security president and co-founder Lisa Falzone said, "Hospitals can't afford downtime. Our new VMS is designed on the Apple iPad to be always up and running, much like our last company's solution, Revel's iPad Point of Sale for restaurants, which changed the history of POS.

“We stay up even during natural disasters, internet outages or cyberattacks. In a world where seconds matter, we've made resilience the default."

The VMS offers offline visitor check-in and checkout, badge printing, and logging, with data syncing once connectivity is restored. It includes pre-registration and real-time watchlist screening, utilising encrypted data handling and access control integration.

The system interfaces with Athena’s proprietary H-Shield platform, which provides Domain Name System (DNS)-based protection for hospitals’ critical digital assets and sensitive information.

Hospitals can customise workflows for different visitor categories such as contractors, vendors, family members, or VIPs, aligning protocols with departmental compliance requirements.

The system also cross-references nationwide predator lists, alerting hospitals during registrations, even when offline.

The VMS integrates with Athena’s AI-powered Weapon Detection System, offering healthcare providers a combined approach to monitoring visitor access and potential physical threats.

The system also aims to support safer hospital environments while maintaining operational efficiency.

Athena Security co-founder and chief technology officer Chris Ciabarra said: "Whether it's preventing unauthorised access, enabling faster emergency response, or ensuring compliance with visitor protocols, our new Hospital Visitor Management System is setting a new standard for healthcare security."
