US-based healthcare software and services provider athenahealth has unveiled new advancements in its electronic health record (EHR) system, athenaClinicals.

These updates aim to streamline clinical workflows and enhance patient care through automation and personalised insights.

The updates are part of ongoing developments within the athenaOne platform, with full release expected ahead of the company’s annual Thrive event in November 2025.

The latest version of athenaClinicals introduces various AI-powered capabilities, including the ability to automate clinical documentation, support decision-making, and facilitate care coordination.

The system includes AI features such as Ambient Notes to aid chart reviews and improve provider efficiency. Athenahealth has ensured flexibility in its AI tools, allowing healthcare professionals to integrate these technologies at their own pace.

A key component of the updated system is the adaptive intelligence layer, which combines specialised engines and machine learning with a comprehensive dataset focused on ambulatory care. This dataset sources information from various entities like hospitals, public health registries, and other electronic health record systems to deliver timely insights during clinical workflows.

athenahealth chairman and CEO Bob Segert said: “Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence are allowing us to revisit the role technology plays in healthcare, and we are bringing customers along as we develop, test, and deploy solutions that will future-proof their practices.

“That includes reimagining clinical workflows to reduce administrative tasks and let clinicians focus fully on their patients.”

Currently in Alpha testing are features such as Clinically Inferred Diagnoses and Chart Assist. These tools use AI to predict potential diagnoses and provide clinicians with a summarised view of patient information, respectively.

Additionally, athenaOne’s ChartSync, an intelligent interoperability tool, is undergoing Beta testing. ChartSync processes medication-related data from external sources and will now also summarise documents sourced from Health Information Exchanges.

Customers using Ambient Notes will have access to a feature that captures discussions during clinical visits and suggests relevant diagnoses for patient charts. These enhancements will be available at no extra cost to all athenahealth users, eliminating the need for additional third-party software purchases.

In February 2025, athenahealth entered a partnership with Abridge to enhance ambulatory care practices by integrating generative AI capabilities and real-time ambient listening.
