Egypt's Ministry of Health has collaborated with super-speciality healthcare services provider Burjeel Holdings to improve oncology care across Africa, focusing on the development of a bone marrow transplant (BMT) programme.
This partnership was formalised with a memorandum of understanding signed at Arab Health 2025, marking a step towards expanding access to advanced cancer treatments.
The collaboration will address the backlog of BMT patients in Egypt, aiming to provide timely access to critical procedures.
Burjeel Holdings will draw on its BMT expertise from Burjeel Medical City to establish a transplant unit in Egypt.
The programme will incorporate treatment protocols and a multi-disciplinary approach to enhance patient outcomes and increase the success rates of transplants. Training programmes for adult and paediatric BMT care will be given for this initiative.
Egyptian healthcare professionals will gain hands-on experience in transplant techniques and post-transplant care, ensuring the local workforce is equipped with BMT knowledge.
The collaboration also sets the stage for joint research efforts in cancer treatment, including CAR-T cell therapy.
Egypt Health and Deputy Prime Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said: “This partnership with Burjeel Holdings underscores our commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and innovation in Egypt.”
Radiation oncology staff will benefit from specialised training in advanced techniques such as stereotactic radiosurgery and body radiotherapy, utilising the BrainLab system.
In addition, training in molecular lab techniques and pathology will be provided in partnership with OncoHelix, aiming to boost diagnostic and precision medicine skills. A one-year specialised oncology nursing training programme will also be introduced.
The initiative will support the recruitment of trained nurses and facilitate authority accreditation, ensuring a sustained and collaborative effort in cancer care.
The collaboration also includes the creation of a medical tourism framework to improve oncology care access for patients throughout Africa.
