First Databank (FDB) has introduced the Meducation Bedside solution, a tool designed to streamline the delivery of medication education directly within the electronic medication administration record (MAR) for inpatient bedside care.

This solution aims to simplify the process for nurses and improve patient understanding by providing accessible, patient-focused medication information.

As a result, the Meducation Bedside solution facilitates the delivery of crucial first dose education to patients during their hospital stay, meeting the standards set by the Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

The tool presents medication education information at a fifth to eighth-grade reading level, available in over 30 languages, and with scalable font sizes.

Designed to alleviate the workload on frontline nurses, it also aims to boost patient comprehension by transforming a manual, time-consuming process into a seamless part of the nursing workflow.

FDB Health Literacy and Language Barriers senior adviser Charles Lee said: “First-dose medication counselling at the bedside is a vital part of care, but nurses are often juggling multiple responsibilities and struggling with fragmented resources.

Hospitals utilising the Meducation Bedside solution can more readily comply with CMS requirements and potentially enhance their Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) medication education assessments.

This tool's integration into the MAR means that nurses no longer need to manually search for medication information or log into separate portals to create educational materials, saving valuable time and reducing complexity.

The implementation of the Meducation Bedside solution has been shown to decrease the effort required by nurses to produce patient-specific medication instructions.

This is quantified using keystroke level modelling (KLM), a method that anticipates the time taken by an expert user for the completion of a routine task without errors on an interactive computer system.
