Guelph General Hospital in Canada has started using Sectra's digital pathology module to improve its diagnostic capabilities and workflow efficiency.

The hospital has integrated the module into its existing Sectra One Cloud service, enabling pathologists to access images instantly.

By doing so, it aims to encourage collaboration across departments and improve patient care outcomes.

Guelph General Hospital pathology and laboratory medicine chief Dr Chris Ma said: “By adding digital pathology into our existing system, we will improve the quality of patient care, by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, precision, workflow and turnaround times.

“It will significantly enhance collaboration between our radiology and pathology teams, and we are confident that this unified approach will lead to better patient outcomes and improved care.”

Sectra's digital pathology module is part of its enterprise imaging solution, which is designed to provide a unified strategy for all imaging requirements.

Guelph General Hospital expects the digital pathology module to offer pathologists opportunities to better review and collaborate on cases, as well as access to AI tools.

The digital workflow reduces reliance on physical glass slides, providing access to digital images of tissue samples immediately and remotely.

Sectra Canada president Nader Soltani said: “Being the first in Canada to adopt Sectra’s Cloud service and now the digital pathology module, Guelph General Hospital is yet again leading the way in advancing Canadian healthcare.

“We look forward to further supporting them in their ongoing digital healthcare transformation journey.”

Guelph General Hospital is an acute care facility that provides a range of services to patients in the Guelph and Wellington County communities.

Last month, the hospital expanded its Cloud service contract with Sectra, having originally signed the contract in October 2023.

It also recently received a five-year funding commitment of C$300,000 ($215,687) from electricity utility and distributor Alectra, which it will use to develop a community-based medical centre.
