HFSC extends contract with Altera Digital Health for Sunrise EHR platform

As part of the extension, HFSC will upgrade to the latest Sunrise 25.1 to improve financial and clinical operations.

Salong Debbarma September 10 2025

US-based Hospital for Special Care (HFSC) has extended its contract with Altera Digital Health for the Sunrise electronic health record (EHR) platform until 2032.

As part of this renewal, the hospital will upgrade to the latest Sunrise 25.1, aiming to enhance both financial and clinical operations.

HFSC serves New Britain, Hartford, and Hebron, ranking as the fourth-largest long-term acute care hospital in the US. The hospital treats both children and adults for complex rehabilitation and chronic disease.

The facility has been utilising the Sunrise platform for more than ten years, designed specifically for mid-size hospitals and health systems.

The upgrade to Sunrise 25.1 will introduce approximately 700 updates and new features. These include centralised billing, simplified denial and appeals tracking, and automated provider-level adjustments to support financial performance.

The platform also offers real-time insights, automates administrative tasks, and simplifies clinical workflows, allowing providers to concentrate more on patient care.

HFSC chief information officer Stan Jankowski said: “Altera has been a true partner through every phase of our EHR journey, demonstrating a commitment to transparency, responsiveness and alignment with our long-term goals.

“Expanding our partnership reflects our confidence in both the Sunrise platform and team. This is more than a technology decision—it’s a strategic investment in infrastructure and resources that will support organisational stability and clinical excellence in the years to come.”

HFSC will also be the first to implement Sunrise Health Record, an intelligent faxing solution designed to address manual faxing challenges. This solution integrates faxing within Sunrise’s health information management deficiency management workflow.

It offers automated inbound fax routing, single-click outbound faxing, and real-time tracking to support communication, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.

Altera Digital Health Sunrise executive vice-president Jay Adams said: “We’re proud to continue supporting HFSC as this renewal sets the stage for collaboration and innovation into the next decade.

“Sunrise 25.1 and new offerings such as Sunrise Health Record give our clients the ability to keep pace with healthcare’s evolution while also supporting critical operations that drive growth and long-term stability.”
